Owner Pleads Guilty for Failing to Comply with an Inspection Order

BRANTFORD, ON – May 6, 2015 – The owner of 664-666 Colborne Street (Quality Inn & Suites Brantford) pled guilty in Provincial Offences Court yesterday for failing to comply with an Inspection Order issued by the Brantford Fire Department. After pleading guilty the owner (SNS Hotels Inc.) was fined $1,000 plus victim surcharges.

The charge relates to a complaint that initiated an inspection that was conducted by the Brantford Fire Department in which an Inspection Order was issued to comply with 22 Ontario Fire Code violations. When the compliance date had passed, and a re-inspection was conducted it was found that six violations remained outstanding. Charges were then laid for all owners; “owner” is defined in the Ontario Fire Code as “any person, firm or corporation having control over any portion of the building or property under consideration and includes the persons in the building or property”. All Ontario Fire Code violations from the above noted Inspection Order have since been corrected.

The Brantford Fire Department would like to remind all owners of properties and businesses that it is your responsibility to comply with the Ontario Fire Code.

The Fire Code, Ontario Regulation 213/07 as amended, is a regulation made under the authority of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 and establishes minimum fire safety requirements for buildings and hazardous processes and activities in the province.
