$6000 in Fines for Fire Code Violations

BRANTFORD, ON – May 5, 2015 –  A numbered corporation pled guilty today in Provincial Offences Court to two fire code violations and was fined $6000.00 plus victim surcharges. During a fire investigation and subsequent inspection at 71 Middleton Street in August of 2014, the sprinkler system was found turned off and a door in a fire separation was found to be wedged open. As a result of the inspection, fire code charges were laid and resulted in the conviction on both charges.
“Failing to maintain a sprinkler system or other fire protection system in operating condition at all times is a serious offence that can endanger building occupants and put property at risk of large losses in the event of a fire” said Fire Prevention Officer Darren Zettler. Responsibility for maintaining fire code compliance rests with building owners and the Ontario Fire Code defines the owner as “any person, firm or corporation having control over any portion of the building  or property  under consideration and includes the persons in the building or property”.
